Tribune

Salute your Tribune, Roman citizens!

Poor and rich, strong and weak, Patrician and Plebeian, hear the words of the Tribune! He is one of you; he is primus inter pares - the first among equals! Welcome to the seat of the most powerful empire of the ancient world - Rome... a city full of trade, politics, and intrigue. Its denizens come from backgrounds as varied and divided as the empire itself. But beneath those divisions they proudly share a common heritage - they are Romans.

Play as one of the great patrician families that once held substantial power and influence. Gain dominance over the seven controlling factions of the city, and use their resources to unite all of Rome under a common banner... yours. In Tribune, you try to become the most powerful family in Rome. Will the Legions stay faithful? Will you be honored with the favor of the Gods? Will you be hailed Tribune? Prepare to write history!

Tribune is a game of resource allocation, set collection, and bidding for 2-5 ambitious Romans, and is playable in 1-2 hours. To win, players must achieve multiple victory conditions depending on the number of opponents and the chosen difficulty of the scenario. These conditions may include the collection of denarii (money), the gathering of laurels (effectively representing influence), the backing of the Roman legions, or the favor of the gods, just to name a few... but the inclusion of these many paths to victory, along with scaleable difficulty and included variants, gives Tribune a nearly infinite replayability; You'll find that much like the varied and colorful Roman factions themselves, no two games of Tribune are alike.

To achieve victory, players need the backing of at least some of the seven factions of Rome. Including such groups as the brave Gladiators, the lowly Plebeians, and the noble Senators, each faction confers its own unique bonus, and by collecting the most cards representing these factions and bidding them against their opponents, players vie for this control. Some of these factions even grant the ability to 'assassinate' your opponents' cards! This allows you to directly undermine their ability to bid, and it gives Tribune's player interaction a satisfying 'gotcha' element. After all, as the great Julius Caesar learned tragically too late, Rome is a city of conspiracy and betrayal.

Tribune takes only a few minutes to learn, but offers a deep and rich strategic experience. Its cards are simple: they feature a faction and a number value. The main area of the board is comprised of several spaces for these cards (face up in some areas and face down in others) along with spots to place your wooden follower pieces, thereby reserving the location and the stack of cards on it. Each player has six followers, and must shrewdly decide how and where to place them to collect the most efficient set of cards for later bidding. Some card spaces require a flat denarii cost; others trigger auctions against other players. Some offer clear prizes; others present a gamble. After the first turn, you'll be able to a formulate a long-term strategy... as long as your rivals stay out of your way!

By balancing resources, cleverly outbidding and outmaneuvering your opponents, and maintaining superior influence, you'll be able to align your forces and claim your birthright: the Title of Tribune!
